Book Review - The Weight of Silence by Heather Gudenkauf

The Weight of Silence
Heather Gudenkauf
Mira
ISBN # 978-0778327400

Imagine that your 7 year old daughter, and her best friend, have gone missing. It's not unusual for them to hang out together, but there is usually a trusted adult with them.

The Weight of Silence by Heather Gudenkauf is a comedy of tragic errors. Neighbors turn against neighbors in their fear and desperation to find Calli and Petra. Old grievances come to light and new secrets are uncovered. Gudenkauf builds a delicious suspense. You'll be turning the pages quickly, driven to find out what happened to these two little girls. There is a plot twist at the end that will leave you gasping.

I actually wrote a somewhat similar novel, though mine involved two missing boys, and I'm sure the plot twist isn't the same. The Weight of Silence actually sounds like a much more riveting read than my still very rough and unpolished novel.

I also wanted to let you know I've nominated your blog for an award. Details are here:

i also reviewed this novel and really enjoyed it! i found gudenkauf's portrayal of children and their thoughts to be so realistic. the story line was fresh and didn't focus solely on the atrocity that is child abduction--there's hope shining through the darkness.

I'm always drawn to stories of missing children, even though as a mom they terrify me!

I think Gudenkauf does a great job of ratcheting up the suspense. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this new author!

Thanks for participating in the tour, Mary!

Really liked this book - as a first time novelist I have been reading many debut authors (homework, in a way) and I have to say I was quite impressed! I will definitely recommend this book to others.

Thank you for the wonderful review! I was so glad to read the comment that mentioned "there is hope shining through the darkness." This is a message that I really want to the reader to take away from The Weight of Silence.

All my best,
Heather Gudenkauf
